Everything I Know About Perth Food Markets

Everything I Know About Perth Food Markets

The Perth food scene knows what it’s doing. In the height of a Western Australian summer, there is nothing better than enjoying a beautiful day, eating the best food the local Perth food trucks have to offer across multiple incredible atmospheric settings.

Spoilt for choice, Go With Gabbs as I talk you through Everything I know About Perth Food Markets…

Freemantle Markets

Arguably the most famous of Perth Food Markets, I have to start with the Freemantle Markets!

A Saturday or Sunday morning spent visiting the Freo markets are a staple to everyone’s weekends in Perth. Since they opened the doors in 1897, crowds have been flocking to the fresh food section to grab a quick bite to eat from one of the many, amazing Freemantle Market Hall food stalls.

When you visit Freemantle in general, its history is visible everywhere, from the Freemantle Prison, to the docks & throughout the high street. The Freo market hall building is one of the only two surviving municipal market buildings in Western Australia & one of the few that is stilled used for its original purpose to this day!

If I could walk you through the dream route of the Freo food market, the path goes like this:

Grab a Bao Bun from What The Bao food stall, then turn around and order a refreshing, freshly pressed lemonade from Alive Juice. Walk into the fruit and veg section where you can pick up fresh produce cheaper than Coles & Woolies. Before finally, browsing the opposite side of market stalls to find yourself at the doughnut stand. Just so you know, the Biscoff filled doughnut is incredible!

Freemantle Markets open Friday – Sunday 9 AM – 6 PM

South Terrace &, Henderson St, Fremantle WA 6160

Scarborough Sunset Markets

Now, if you want to experience the best of what Perth has to offer in the food truck scene & scoff your face in a beautiful setting, the Scarborough Sunset Markets are where you need to head.

Scarborough Sunset Markets – Summer Edition

Out of all the Perth food markets, Scarborough markets on a glorious Thursday evening is my favourite. Prepare to complete multiple laps around and around whilst you try, and fail, to choose one option. From Indian Kebabs, Korean popcorn chicken, fusion fish taco’s and every possible way to cook a potato, you will find it at Scarborough night markets.

Once you experience it for yourself, you will fully understand why I limited my food consumption for the day before leaving work early (sorry not sorry) to head over to the beach. Do not feel guilty if you have more than one dinner that evening!

Once you’ve finally decided, head down to the beautiful amphitheatre, basked in the blazing final moments of the day’s sun, setting into the stunning turquoise sea that Western Australia is famous for.

Accompanied by a DJ & various musical artists each week, listen to the talented saxophone player, dance along to the bongo drums or feel the vibrations of the Didgeridoo being played over summer chilled techno beats.

There are a lot of decisions to be made on Thursdays; next up, is where you are going to sit and eat! Will it be the Summer deck chairs, the wicker beach seats, colourful beanbags, rugs on the floor or just perch on the grassy banks of Scarborough Beach?

You are guaranteed to have a gorgeous evening with friends at these Thursday night markets. Also, if you’re looking for date ideas in Perth, this is it, every single time!

Scarborough Sunset Markets – Winter Edition

With the outcry for more sunset markets in Scarborough once the summer sunset markets ended, the powers that be, have listened!

This winter, all of Perth will willingly brace the cold, wearing our warmest woolly hats and many layers as we queue to grab a warm mulled cider or wine from the market bar.

If Europe can have winter and Christmas markets, let me introduce you to a Perth Food market and Aussie version equivalent, just in time for the tradition of Christmas in July!

Take your time trying to choose your comfort food from one of the many delicious food stalls, it may take a while to decide! grab a spot at the amphitheatre to watch the sun go down with the mellow tunes of the live musical act playing.

Winter Delights occurs every Saturday evening (3 pm – 8 pm) from 29 May until 30 October!

Freo Farmers Market (Sundays)

If you are looking for a Sunday farmers market in the Perth area, the fan favourite is the Freo Farmers Market. With unbeaten prices and deals, you can select the best options from locally grown, organic produce.

Freo Farmers MarketSundays’ 8 AM – 12 PM Fremantle College, 151 Lefroy Rd Beaconsfield

Summer X Salt Markets – Trigg

This one is a slight reach for food markets, but it’s a cute Saturday morning market with tasty food choices!

Head up to the Clarko Reserve, just up past Scarborough and have a chilled morning with a cuppa or coffee (in the choice of your own mug – all about sustainability) & browse the Aussie owned brand stalls. The Trigg Summer X Salt Markets are seasonal and run for six weeks from Feb – April, take a seat on the rugs and beanbags, listen to the beautiful voice of various acoustic artists each weekend and finish off the perfect Perth morning with a dip in the sea at Trigg Beach.

Friday Night Food Markets In Perth

Twilight Hawkers Market – Perth CBD

The thing with Perth is that everything is really spread out! It takes a good forty minutes on public transport to get to Scarborough & the beachfront markets, it also takes nearly an hour to get to Freemantle on the best of days!

So, the only food market in Perth CBD to rival the previously discussed options is the Twilight Hawkers Markert every Friday night in Forrest Place.

Straight from finishing work in the city, you can head into the centre of Perth CBD, if you are not sure where you are going, follow the incredible smells of Thai curries, Lebanese Shawarma & Gnocci Brothers Gnocci, wafting down Murray St.

Twilight Hawkers MarketFriday evenings from November – March 4.30 – 9.30 PM at Forrest Place

Red Chinese Lanterns Old Shanghai Perth Food Markets

Old Shanghai – Northbridge

I have had this terrible habit since living in Australia of comparing all cities to Sydney. I need to stop because it stops me from appreciating the individual city and just enjoying my experience there without comparing the two (It’s purely because I love Sydney so much and it’s my heart home!).

However, you can only imagine my excitement when I discovered Old Shanghai in Northbridge – giving good old Sydney Central Spice Alley a run for its money! (Read all about Spice Alley & Sydney BYO’s here).

A collection of Asian inspired market food stalls, all housed under one roof, mixed with mismatched seating and hawker market vibes, even down to the red lanterns adorning the ceiling.

Although Old Shanghai isn’t BYO (Bring your own), there is a licensed bar stall you can grab a bottle of Chang beer to wash down your nasi goreng & dumplings.

Not only restricted to Northbridge – but there is also an Old Shanghai in Freemantle and other areas across Perth.

Perth Food Markets Under The Bridge Freo Food Stalls

Under The Bridge Freo Food Trucks

More food trucks and sunsets – which never get boring, only this time, instead of the beach, you get to overlook the Swan River & Freemantle Harbour. Probably the smallest of the Perth food markets, East Street Jetty offers an intimate Monday evening with around five or six food trucks to choose from. Leaving the drinking and pop up bars to Scarborough night market, this is a more family friendlier option underneath the famous Rainbow Sea Containers of Freemantle.

Freo Food TrucksMondays 5 – 8 pm, November – March East Street Jetty, 21 Beach St, Fremantle
